Job Description

As a Power Electronics Engineer, you will report to the Valve Converter Electrical Team Lead within the Valve Converter Engineering & Technology Function. This team is responsible for developing and delivering high-voltage power electronic solutions for various applications.

This is an exciting and dynamic field of power engineering, where GE's leading contribution has worldwide recognition. The role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skills, and personal development within an internationally recognized expert in this field.

While based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories, and customer sites.

Candidate Profile
  • The ideal candidate will have a degree in electrical or electronic engineering, but a proven track record and evidence of experience and abilities to perform the role are more important.
  • Candidates should have a good understanding of power semiconductors, their control, protection, and application, which would be advantageous.
  • The candidate should have the ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team, an enquiring mind, and a desire to learn new skills.
  • An ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.
Responsibilities
  • Use design tools to specify converter valves and deliver valve design reports to support tender and project.
  • Generate technical documentation, such as valve design, type test specifications, routine test specifications, and site pre-commissioning specifications, to deliver converter valves at project stage.
  • Work against customer specifications at project stage, including clause-by-clause analysis and risk assessment.
  • Integrate with other engineering departments for product definition, including system design, main scheme, layout, and commercial aspects.
  • Test and validate high-voltage power electronic devices, including IGBTs and thyristors, and passive components used in valve converters.
  • Design or apply experience on IGBT and thyristor driver circuits.
  • Design experience on protection and control circuits for IGBT and thyristors.
  • Perform routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing.
  • Provide product support during the complete life cycle, from development to tender and commissioning of projects.
  • Support site activities during installation of valve converters, pre-commissioning, and training for customers.
  • Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Educated to degree level in electrical or power electronic engineering.
Required Characteristics
  • Experience in power electronic converters, such as motor drives, HVDC, and FACTS applications.
  • Experience with high-power electronic components, including IGBTs, thyristors, and passive components.
  • Experience in testing and validation of power electronic devices.
  • Thermal design skills, including loss calculations and heatsink specification.
  • Specification and report writing skills.
  • Experience with simulation tools, such as Matlab-Simulink and PSCAD-EMTDC.
  • Requirements capture and risk analysis skills.
  • EHS compliance ability.
  • Good communication skills.
  • High-voltage engineering experience.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a small group of engineers.
