We are currently seeking a Senior Instrument Design Engineer to play a crucial role in a state-of-the-art design initiative for a novel nuclear power facility.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Instrument Design Engineer, you will be part of a dynamic and diverse C&I team. Your responsibilities will include the provision of sensors, field instrumentation, connectors, and cabling solutions for the nuclear power plant project. Your role will encompass the specification and selection of both nuclear-qualified and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) instruments, including advanced smart instruments, along with the associated cabling systems and their integration with plant processes and C&I systems teams.
- Collaborate with C&I Systems Engineers and Plant Systems Engineers to translate high-level requirements into detailed specifications for sensors, field instruments, connectors, and cables.
- Engage with systems engineers and vendors to review documentation and select appropriate devices that meet the established specifications.
- Evaluate and confirm that the design and performance specifications of candidate devices align with functional and interface requirements.
- Support the assessment of smart devices using established criteria (e.g., EMPHASIS, IEC 61508).
- Lead the hardware type testing and qualification of sensors, field instrumentation, connectors, and cabling solutions, coordinating with software engineers for related review and qualification processes.
- Develop Validation Plans and define test vehicles to ensure compliance with instrument, cable, and connector requirements.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to understand the functional and non-functional performance capabilities of system components to facilitate effective design.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures concerning the lifecycle of instruments, cables, and connectors.
- Ensure optimal solutions are provided for the nuclear power plant by supporting procurement, production, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
- Act as a custodian for the standardization of sensors, field instrumentation, connectors, and cabling solutions across the organization.
- Contribute to the development of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent safety assessors.
Candidate Profile

Essential Criteria:
Proficient C&I System Design Skills
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the systematic design lifecycle of C&I systems, including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of safety or process-critical sensors, field instrumentation, connectors, and cable solutions.
Knowledge of Industry Standards
Familiarity with relevant industry standards for safety-critical systems (e.g., IEC 61508, IEC 61226).
Application of Advanced System Methodologies
Experience in applying systems engineering methodologies, including Model-Based Systems Engineering to C&I systems.
Effective Communication Skills
Proven ability to convey information clearly and compellingly to stakeholders.
Training & Qualifications
- A degree in electrical, electronics, instrumentation, control systems, mechatronics, physics, or computer science.
- Consideration will be given to applicants without a degree who can demonstrate relevant experience.
