Service Overview:
The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Team operates within the Inclusion Service of Education, maintaining strong collaborative relationships with various teams across the council. Our established team is committed to supporting children, young people, and their families in the community. The council has been chosen by the Department for Education to spearhead the SEND and Alternative Provision Change Programme for the South-East, providing a unique opportunity to influence the future of special educational needs and alternative provision.
Your Role:
As the SEN Team Leader, you will oversee the Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment process, ensuring the provision and placement of special educational services are secured and monitored. Your responsibilities will include managing complex casework, addressing complaints, mediating disputes, and representing cases at high-level meetings to facilitate resolutions.
You will lead a team of SEND Advisers and SEN Caseworkers, ensuring their work meets high standards while supporting their professional growth. Additionally, you will provide expert guidance to a diverse range of professionals and advise schools on the development and implementation of special educational needs policies to ensure that vulnerable learners achieve positive outcomes.
The role also involves delivering training on SEN-related topics and overseeing the recruitment, induction, and development of staff to maintain a high-quality service. This position is dynamic and challenging, requiring a broad skill set, knowledge, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
Qualifications and Skills:
Candidates should possess a level 5 qualification or higher in Education, Social Care, or a related field, along with substantial experience working with children, young people, and families in educational, health, or social care settings, particularly in special educational needs. A thorough understanding of the local authority's role concerning special educational needs and disability, including relevant legislation and policies, is essential.
Strong communication, analytical, teamwork, interpersonal, and negotiation skills are crucial, as is the ability to engage positively with children and families facing learning difficulties or disabilities.
