Job Overview:

Leonardo is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our IR Detectors Team in Southampton. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and developing the next generation of IR Sensors for Space and Defence sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the entire Engineering Lifecycle, considering product quality, safety, reliability, and other requirements.
  • Develop innovative mechanical solutions and techniques to advance the next generation of IR Detectors.
  • Support Programme Teams in delivering Product technical solutions for all aspects related to Mechanical Engineering.
  • Generate Mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
  • Design and develop product and production tool/fixture designs, including fine detail definition.
  • Use 3D CAD tools for Mechanical design and development.
  • Participate in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
  • Support Procurement and Manufacturing during the introduction of new products into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
  • Manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule, and Cost.
  • Mentor junior members of the Cameras Team in Engineering competencies and best practices.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of an upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) or relevant experience in a highly regulated Engineering Industry.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools, preferably PTC Creo.
  • Problem-solving skills using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems effectively.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical engineering detailed design, numerical calculations, tolerance studies, and BS8888 drawing standards.
  • Working knowledge of DFM/A and experience in working within a multi-discipline Engineering Team to deliver to schedule, cost, and quality targets.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in Defence, Space, or Medical sectors.
  • Knowledge of working with vacuum assemblies and optical assemblies.
  • Experience in designing Electro-mechanical products and designing for harsh environments (Land, Sea, and Air), including EMC.
  • Awareness of Mechanical & Thermal Analysis, including 'first pass' analyses.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical Engineering industry trends and new tools, techniques, and technologies.
  • Experience in Tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements and design of vibration test fixtures.
