We are currently seeking a Section Head and Chief Scientist for our Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Reference Laboratory. This critical role within the Bacteriology Reference Department offers a unique opportunity to provide managerial, scientific, and professional leadership, significantly impacting public health through our surveillance initiatives. These initiatives are essential for identifying infectious diseases, characterizing microbial pathogens, and facilitating effective treatments and interventions, ultimately reducing the public health burden associated with bacterial STIs.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary duties will encompass:
- Leading the management and scientific oversight of the Bacterial STI laboratory surveillance, ensuring services are delivered safely and in compliance with Quality (ISO15189) and governance standards, while adhering to Health and Safety protocols.
- Ensuring the rigorous validation of clinical reports and collaborating with the Bacteriology Reference Department staff and consultant medical microbiologists to provide clinical interpretation and timely delivery of reference services.
- Regularly reviewing services to align with public health requirements and fostering innovations that enhance laboratory effectiveness.
- Identifying and pursuing income generation opportunities from grants or commercial sources for the evaluation of new assays and technologies.
- Leading data analysis from studies, maintaining comprehensive records of evaluations, and presenting findings at scientific conferences.
- Preparing reports for commercial clients and drafting papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Training and supervising new staff, visitors, and students, while ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Participating in Senior Management Team meetings and supporting the professional development of team members.
- Contributing to the maintenance of laboratory accreditation and quality management systems, while ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants will be evaluated based on the following essential criteria:
- Professional registration with the HCPC.
- A PhD in Microbiology or a related field.
- Experience in the STI domain.
- Demonstrated experience managing services accredited to ISO 15189 standards.
- A proven track record of research with significant publications in relevant areas.
- Clinical scientific and molecular microbiology expertise.
Desirable Qualifications
Familiarity with IT/LIMS systems and experience in molecular assay development and validation are advantageous.
