Job Requirements

The following qualifications apply to all Highway Maintenance Worker positions:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Successfully pass a physical/medical examination and drug test.
  • Cannabis use is strictly prohibited for employees in this role.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1

In addition to the general requirements, you must possess a valid Class D Driver License.

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2

In addition to the general requirements, you must:

  • Hold a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
  • Successfully demonstrate your ability to operate a large dump truck within two weeks of employment. Failure to pass this evaluation will result in termination.
Highway Maintenance Worker 1

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Successfully complete the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 program or have one year of relevant experience.
  • Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with the required endorsements.
  • Hold two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications and specific equipment certifications as needed.
  • Successfully complete the NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within your first two weeks of employment.
Important Considerations

This role requires:

  • Responding to emergency callouts within one hour during inclement weather conditions.
  • Performing manual tasks, operating plows, and carrying out other assigned duties.
  • Flexibility with overtime work and shift schedules.
  • Supporting the Incident Command System during emergency situations.

Some positions may require additional credentials or background checks.
