About the Role

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics to join our team. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for providing expert clinical care to patients with musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those requiring hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a specialty surgical service for adult patients with hip and knee disorders, including hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery.
  • Participate in a 1:9 on-call emergency rota for adults and paediatric patients with musculoskeletal trauma, including weekends.
  • Be involved in teaching medical staff and medical students from Keele University.
  • Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
  • Work effectively as part of a multi-professional team, demonstrating excellent team-working skills and a professional attitude.
  • Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
  • Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury, which are located 20 minutes' drive apart.

Person Specification
  • Essential:
    • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
    • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC).
    • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the specialty, and in particular with musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb.
    • Subspecialty expertise in lower limb surgery.
    • Ability to teach clinical skills, teach and lecture on the specialty.
    • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
    • Willingness to actively participate in postgraduate training on a regular basis and to support, in particular, SpR core training.
  • Desirable:
    • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
    • Experience in clinical undergraduate/postgraduate teaching.
    • Experience in NHS management.
    • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
    • Publications in refereed journals.
