Position Overview

We are looking for a committed legal practitioner to become a part of our welcoming Community Care and Court of Protection division. Reporting directly to the Senior Associate, you will handle a varied caseload of privately paying clients while mentoring junior legal staff and aiding in the growth of our specialized legal practice. As a founding member of the Professional Deputy Forum and a recognized authority in Chambers and The Legal 500, our team provides expert, comprehensive guidance in Community Care/Public Law, Court of Protection Health and Welfare, and Special Educational Needs.

This position offers a clear trajectory for career advancement, including avenues for business development, within a supportive and esteemed team environment.

Clientele

Our clients encompass a diverse range, including Boyes Turner's Court of Protection team (within the limits of a Deputy's authority as per Re ACC) and Professional Deputies across the country.

Moreover, our team collaborates with various other private clients, such as parents, young individuals with capacity, families, lay attorneys, lay deputies, professional trustees, case managers, litigators, and charitable organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing a mixed caseload of Community Care and Court of Protection cases under the guidance of senior legal professionals. Depending on your legal background, there may be opportunities to engage with Special Educational Needs matters.
  • Supporting marketing initiatives and business development efforts.
  • Assisting the Court of Protection Property & Affairs team with Community Care/Public Law and Court of Protection matters in accordance with Re ACC.
  • Managing inquiries from lay clients and Professional Deputies, including responding to Re ACC quotation requests.
  • Drafting a variety of complex legal documents, including advisory letters, grounds for appeal, formal complaints, instructions for experts and counsel, court forms and applications, position statements, and witness statements.
  • Engaging in advocacy during needs assessments, dispute resolution meetings, statutory appeals, and court or tribunal hearings.
  • Coordinating with clients, experts, public entities, counsel, and the Court.
  • Supervising the preparation of bundles by junior legal staff and support personnel.
  • Providing training and oversight to junior legal staff and support personnel as necessary.
  • Ensuring that all work maintains a high standard of quality to uphold the firm's reputation.
  • Assisting with the management of fee estimates, invoicing, and accounting processes.

Essential Qualifications

  • Experience in Community Care/Public Law and Court of Protection Health & Welfare.
  • Capability to independently manage a diverse caseload of privately paying clients under the supervision of senior legal professionals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong client care and interpersonal abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient IT skills, including a solid understanding of Microsoft Office (especially Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Court of Protection Property & Affairs.
  • Familiarity with Special Educational Needs law.
  • Advocacy experience (e.g., NHS Continuing Healthcare appeals, round-table/ADR meetings).
  • Experience in training and supervising junior legal staff and support personnel.
