Role Summary

The position of Trainee Train Driver is ideal for individuals who are enthusiastic about delivering exceptional customer service.

Train Drivers are essential in establishing a modern standard for rail travel, focusing on providing a comfortable, swift, and enjoyable experience for passengers. Besides operating trains to transport customers to their destinations, the role involves delivering outstanding customer service, adhering to established protocols, and collaborating with team members to ensure efficient service delivery.

Our training program demands dedication, a commitment to an intensive training phase, and meticulous attention to detail, but it offers a fulfilling career path with the chance to contribute to the evolving landscape of travel. Throughout the training, candidates will undergo various assessments, both practical and theoretical, equipping them with the necessary skills and support to advance to a Qualified Driver.

Candidate Profile

Are you skilled in time management and capable of working independently while maintaining focus in a safety-oriented environment?

Can you consistently follow instructions, especially when safety is a top priority?

Do you possess strong communication abilities and thrive in a structured environment with defined procedures?

Are you eager to assist colleagues and customers with a focus on safety and service excellence?

If these qualities resonate with you, this position may represent a significant career opportunity.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must be at least 21 years old to qualify for the training program, as mandated by industry standards. Applicants should reside within a 60-minute travel radius to the depot, without relying on public transportation when unavailable. This requirement is non-negotiable due to safety obligations. Availability to work shifts with varying start times, including weekends and night shifts, is essential. Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive driver medical examination, which includes assessments of hearing, vision, and color perception (using Ishihara plates). Please refer to the FAQ section for detailed medical standards.

Additional Information:

Previous experience in the railway sector is not a prerequisite. We welcome applicants from diverse industries and backgrounds. What we seek is your enthusiasm, energy, and readiness to learn in a structured setting.

We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace at FirstGroup, ensuring that we provide a railway service that is accessible to all customers.

Given the critical nature of this safety role, our recruitment process is thorough, incorporating various ability assessments to evaluate the essential competencies required for the position. Rest assured, we will provide Practice Test Materials prior to any assessment events, allowing ample time for preparation.

The training salary is set at £28,268 per annum, increasing to £60,124 upon full qualification.

Opportunities for Trainee Drivers are available, with the potential to enter our Talent Pool.

Successful candidates will be placed in a Talent Pool, pending the availability of positions.
