Position Overview

The Molecular Laboratory Supervisor will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew by overseeing the molecular laboratory dedicated to a significant initiative aimed at sequencing a vast collection of fungi and lichen specimens. This project encompasses a comprehensive strategy involving whole genome sequencing and barcoding methodologies over an extended timeframe.

The Laboratory Supervisor will be accountable for all laboratory functions associated with this initiative, directly managing and mentoring the laboratory personnel. This role will also entail designing and overseeing research and development activities, as well as contributing molecular data from fungal collections to facilitate DNA sequencing efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations of the molecular laboratory.
  • Lead and train laboratory staff to ensure high standards of performance.
  • Design and supervise research projects, ensuring alignment with overall project goals.
  • Contribute to the generation of molecular data to support sequencing initiatives.
  • Participate in training programs and assist in the preparation of scientific publications.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for individuals with proven expertise in managing molecular laboratories and leading lab teams. Essential qualifications include experience in high-throughput sequencing, genomics methodologies, and research and development. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in museomics and the sequencing of historical collections. Familiarity with standard operating procedure (SOP) development, as well as basic bioinformatics and statistical analysis, is expected. Knowledge of health and safety regulations in the UK and experience working with fungal specimens will be advantageous. A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific discipline is required.

Contract Details

This is a fixed-term position within the Science Directorate, with the possibility of extension. The role will involve some travel within the UK.
