We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ophthalmology Specialist to join our team at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. As a Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our ophthalmology services.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of our Consultant Ophthalmologists and will be responsible for managing general ophthalmic problems. You will have the opportunity to participate in audit projects and contribute to the supervision and training of junior doctors and medical students.

This is a non-residential post, but accommodation may be available subject to availability and at a charge. You will be expected to participate in evening clinics with booked urgent patients and may be required to participate in an on-call rota in the future.

Main Duties of the Job

The Specialty Doctor will have a job plan based on 10 Programme Activities (PAs), which will be a flexible combination of elective operating lists, outpatient clinics, and ward rounds. The allocated PAs will be subject to change.

Monday: Paediatrics

Tuesday: SPA

Thursday: Theatre

Friday: Eye Casualty

Saturday: Oculoplastics

Job Responsibilities

Teaching: You will have the opportunity to assist with the teaching of clinical and practical skills to undergraduate and ophthalmic surgical trainees.

Person Specification
  • Basic Medical Qualifications
  • Membership of Royal College of Ophthalmology
  • Ability to carry out intravitreal injections
  • Ability to carry out YAG and Argon laser treatments independently
  • Demonstratable postgraduate experience within Ophthalmology
  • Ability to practice independently
  • Experience of working in Eye Casualty
  • Fellowship in Ophthalmology from one of the Royal Colleges
  • Microsurgical experience
  • Ability to operate unsupervised
  • Ability to perform cataract surgery
  • Ability to carry out FFA
  • Evidence of acquired skills
Clinical Skills
  • Technical Knowledge & Clinical Expertise: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need. Demonstrates appropriate technical competence with potential for developing strong/complex clinical/diagnostic skills
  • Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. ALS, ALERTS or equivalent
Academic/Research Skills
  • Research skills: demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, research and evidence-based practise, with potential to contribute to research
  • Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements
  • Evidence of active participation in audit
  • Evidence to contributing to teaching & learning of others
  • Evidence of participation in risk management and/or clinical/laboratory research
Teaching Experience
  • Ability to assist with the teaching of clinical and practical skills to 18 undergraduate and ophthalmic surgical trainees
