Opportunity Overview

We are seeking four highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team of Small Animal Rotating Interns at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies/Hospital for Small Animals.

This one-year rotating internship offers an excellent opportunity for those considering further clinical training or wishing to expand their skillset and return to private clinical practice.

The Opportunity

Based within the Hospital for Small Animals at Easter Bush Campus, Midlothian, this internship provides a unique chance to gain preparatory experience in a busy hospital environment.

Interns will rotate through the referral services, including Anaesthesia, Behaviour, Cardiology, Clinical Pathology, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency & Critical Care, Exotics, Neurology, Oncology (medical and radiotherapy), Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Pathology and Soft Tissue Surgery.

Each intern will be paired with a mentor in their speciality of interest, providing guidance on career progression and the opportunity to pursue a research project throughout the year.

We also boast a thriving programme of continuing education, including dedicated weekly seminars, practical sessions, journal clubs, board review sessions, specialty rounds and book clubs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the out of hours service, including support for patients in the ICU and primary care of general practice and exotics clinic patients.
  • Participate in elective rotations, which may be spent gaining further clinical or research experience within the veterinary school or undertaking externships elsewhere.
  • Enrol in the Higher Education Academy to achieve a teaching qualification.
  • Receive RECOVER training and certification, as well as Fear Free Certification.
Requirements
  • Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
  • Appropriate English language qualification.
  • Ability to work in the UK.
  • Experience working in a UK veterinary practice (preferable but not essential).
  • Completion of a Personal Development Plan (PDP) (preferable but not essential).
