Job Description

Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Behaviour Support Mentor to work within our Pupil Referral Unit for students permanently excluded from mainstream education. The successful candidate will provide one-on-one and group support to students aged 4-11 with SEMH needs, helping them to manage their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build positive relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement behaviour management strategies and interventions tailored to individual student needs, in collaboration with the teaching team and SENCO.
  • Foster a supportive and nurturing environment within the classroom and across the school, promoting positive behaviour and encouraging student engagement.
  • Monitor and record student progress, behaviour incidents, and interventions, maintaining accurate records and reporting findings to relevant staff members.
  • Work closely with teachers, support staff, and external agencies to develop and implement personalised behaviour plans and support strategies for students.
  • Act as a positive role model for students, demonstrating empathy, patience, and resilience in all interactions.
  • Support students in accessing the curriculum and participating in classroom activities, adapting resources and providing additional assistance as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of a safe and inclusive school environment, promoting respect, tolerance, and understanding among students and staff.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs desirable, preferably within a school or educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of behavioural management techniques and strategies, with the ability to apply them effectively in a classroom environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish positive relationships with students, staff, and parents/carers.
  • Resilience, patience, and empathy when working with challenging behaviour and complex emotional needs.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, psychology, counselling, or a related field are desirable but not essential.
