Underwriting Trainee

Starr Insurance is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Underwriting Trainee to join our team. As an Underwriting Trainee, you will play a critical role in supporting our underwriting team in evaluating and managing risk.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in six-month rotational underwriting training across major lines of business, including Property, Energy, and Construction.
  • Attend intensive specialist insurance training courses and external conferences to enhance your knowledge and skills.
  • Collaborate with designated mentors to ensure knowledge retention and promote cross-selling.
  • Commence studying for CII qualifications to advance your underwriting expertise.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the London and International insurance markets.
  • Gain insight into current business strategies and broker contacts in the Saudi region.
  • Ensure underwriting files are complete and contain all relevant documents, obtaining any outstanding items from brokers or underwriters as needed.
  • Verify signings are accurate and consistent with written confirmations.
  • Liaise with brokers to follow up on outstanding renewals as directed.
  • Produce standard and ad-hoc reports as required.
  • Thoroughly understand risk and seek further clarity as necessary.
  • Underwrite profitable business in accordance with business plans.
  • Adhere to Starr underwriting standards as outlined in the Underwriting Manual.
  • Report any suspicion of financial crime to the Money Laundering Reporting Officer immediately.
  • Operate within the Company's standards for Treating Customers Fairly.
  • Manage potential conflicts of interest to maintain the company's integrity.
  • Advise Compliance of any complaints immediately.
Requirements:
  • Saudi National or dual UK/Saudi citizens with a strong educational background from a London or UK business school.
  • Good cultural understanding of the UK and Middle East region.
  • Insurance knowledge is desirable.
Skills:
  • Fluent Arabic and English essential.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Negotiation, judgment, and decision-making ability.
  • Strong numeracy skills.
  • Professional business writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong communicator, both written and oral.
Systems & IT:
  • MS Office – Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate calibre.
