About the Role

At Allied World, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Underwriter to join our Cargo Division. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for underwriting cargo business and providing technical, analytical, operational, and underwriting services to our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Submission Preparation: Analyze and prepare submissions prior to underwriting, including account research and preparation for client and broker meetings.
  • Underwriting: Underwrite new/renewal business and alterations to existing contracts in accordance with Letter of Authority, relevant technical knowledge, and appropriate rating methodology.
  • System Management: Enter and maintain information with various in-house underwriting systems and generate reports as required.
  • Quote and Bind: Prepare quotes and bind accounts in underwriting systems as underwritten or as directed by other team underwriters.
  • Liaison and Communication: Liaise with other underwriters and brokers as well as other internal departments as required.
  • Account Analysis: Perform underwriting referrals with manager following account analysis, including thorough reviews of underwriting submissions.
  • Client and Broker Engagement: Attend client/broker lunches, dinners, and other work-related social outings as applicable.
  • Account Pricing and Recommendations: Assist with the development of account pricing/recommendations/peer review.
  • Meetings and Renewals: Attend relevant internal and external meetings and undertake renewal monitoring and renewal process management.
  • File Maintenance: Maintain underwriting files in accordance with company standards.
  • Broker Liaison: Liaise with brokers on account administration matters, including premium and outstanding underwriting documentation.
Requirements
  • Experience: At least 5+ years' demonstrable experience in Cargo or similar line with expertise and in-depth working knowledge of standard market policy and endorsement wordings.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills for liaison with clients and brokers, including delivering effective presentations and building strong working and networking relationships.
  • Marketing and Business Development: Strong marketing and business development capability – commercial acumen; ability to influence and negotiate to various levels of seniority, internally and externally.
  • Computer Literacy: Computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and in using an underwriting system.
  • Attention to Detail and Quantitative Skills: Good attention to detail and quantitative skills.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage deadlines and conflicting priorities.
