Position Overview
The Thoracic Nurse Case Management team is seeking a skilled Nurse Practitioner to become a vital member of our collaborative group. This role begins at band 5, with a clear pathway for advancement to band 6 upon successful completion of a structured training and development program, typically within a 6-month period.
Role of Thoracic Nurse Practitioners
Our Thoracic Nurse Practitioners play a crucial role in conducting pre-operative evaluations for patients scheduled for Thoracic surgery. They also provide essential psychological support to individuals diagnosed with cancer, starting from the initial diagnosis. The Nurse Practitioners work closely with lung nurse specialists, Consultant surgeons, Anaesthetists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care throughout the patient's journey.

Job Duties
In your initial training as a band 5 Nurse Practitioner, you will participate in the History Taking and Physical Examination course and complete all necessary competencies, including specialty competencies in practice. During this training phase, you will also acquire ECG competencies for interpreting results, preparing you for future leadership roles.
Once you achieve full competency as a band 6 Nurse Practitioner, you will conduct both in-person and telephonic assessments of patients scheduled for elective surgery, ensuring their safety and readiness for the procedure.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will ideally possess experience in supporting patients with Cardiovascular and Thoracic conditions within either primary or secondary care settings. Adaptability and flexibility are essential, as the role may require working in diverse environments across the organization. A willingness to work according to a rota is also necessary.
As a Nurse Practitioner within the Thoracic team, you will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, promote high standards of patient-centered care, and collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries.
Qualifications and Training
Essential Qualifications
- Registered Nurse on the relevant part of the register
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Degree qualification or equivalent relevant experience
- Willingness to undertake the History Taking and Physical Assessment course within 6 months
- Commitment to completing 50 sign-off and Thoracic competencies within 6 months
- Progress towards completing local training for ECG competency within 6 months
