Role Objectives

  • Guarantees that UK Bus operates within legal parameters and adheres to the 'Safety Management System,' 'Road Traffic Safety Management System,' and Safety Quality Manual.
  • Champions the strategic deployment of safety initiatives and executes targeted improvement programs to mitigate safety risks, complemented by a measurement framework to evaluate safety performance enhancements.
  • Ensures accountability among executive leadership for fostering a strong safety culture throughout the organization, collaborating with Arriva Group-wide HSE colleagues to achieve collective safety goals and benchmarks.
  • Aligns with the Arriva Group Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and spearheads efforts to establish UK Bus's environmental, social, and governance reporting frameworks for future publication.

About the Position

  • Formulates the HSE Strategy and Safety Culture alongside relevant safety improvement initiatives and performance measurement frameworks.
  • Designs and implements safety campaigns that focus on enhancing safety measures and addressing identified risks.
  • Acts as a professional authority in Health & Safety, supporting investigations into safety incidents and driving necessary corrective actions.
  • Oversees the generation and presentation of safety performance metrics for UK Bus Management Teams and external governing bodies.
  • Establishes clear standards for HSE and Road Risk accountability.
  • Leads the UK Bus Safety Committee, ensuring alignment of safety strategies with Group safety KPIs and objectives.
  • Implements health and safety audit and compliance protocols, including leadership safety assessments and fleet audits.
  • Maintains and enhances the 'Safety Management System,' 'Road Traffic Safety Management System,' and Safety Quality Manual, updating Standard Operating Procedures as necessary.
  • Collaborates with external organizations and UK Bus executives to address emerging safety challenges and adapt to legislative changes.
  • Coordinates Arriva Group CSRD reporting requirements for UK Bus, focusing on data integrity and materiality analysis.
  • Supports the transition to a Zero Emission Fleet and related strategies as defined by regional leadership.

Candidate Profile

A degree in a relevant field, complemented by recognized professional qualifications in Health & Safety, Environmental Management, and Sustainability, along with substantial experience in a similar capacity. Familiarity with ISO39001, ISO45001, and ISO14001 is essential. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a proven track record in transforming safety performance and culture within large organizations.

Essential Skills

  • Technical degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Technologies, or a related field.
  • Extensive management experience in the EH&S sector within industrial settings.
  • Proven expertise in strategic planning, team leadership, and the successful implementation of safety measures in large-scale operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute initiatives aimed at enhancing safety culture and reducing incidents.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with a focus on team development.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging diverse stakeholders on health, safety, risk, and sustainability matters.
  • Experience in risk mitigation within an organizational context.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with trade unions and regulatory transport bodies.
  • Capacity to work effectively with various departments and external partners while addressing complex strategic issues.
