Position Overview
Are you interested in contributing to significant Defence challenges and playing a vital role in the national security of the United Kingdom? The Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives (Level 6) Degree Apprenticeship program offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills in this critical field.
Founded in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) is dedicated to delivering nuclear capabilities that deter threats and safeguard our nation. The DNO manages all aspects of defence nuclear operations, ensuring the provision of nuclear deterrence and overseeing the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, which encompasses all entities, programs, and personnel that support the UK's nuclear deterrent.
The UK's independent nuclear deterrent has been in place for over six decades, aimed at countering the most severe threats to our national security and that of our NATO Allies. To maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent, we are developing four new nuclear-armed submarines, known as the Dreadnought Class, and modernizing our nuclear warheads. These initiatives showcase cutting-edge technology and exemplify the excellence of British engineering.
At DNO, we prioritize diversity and inclusion, recognizing that a variety of perspectives and experiences enhances decision-making, creativity, and innovation. We foster a culture that celebrates differences, ensuring our workforce feels supported, included, and empowered.
Role Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to learn, a curious mindset, and a logical approach to problem-solving. Commitment to completing the 5-year apprenticeship program and obtaining a Level 6 degree qualification is essential. If you align with these qualities, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
The Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) comprises various government and industry organizations that form part of the Ministry of Defence, dedicated to sustaining the UK's nuclear capabilities.
Program Details
The Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Level 6 Professional Degree (BEng) Apprenticeship focuses on the Safety pathway within the Engineering sector. The course is conducted by The University of Wales Trinity Saint David, with off-the-job learning occurring in blocks throughout the year. You will spend approximately three and a half months annually at the university, with the first learning block being significantly longer.
This program is recognized and accredited by the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE), and you will be registered as a student member during your apprenticeship, leading to professional registration upon completion.
Candidate Profile
As an Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) Safety Case apprentice, your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting projects led by our safety professionals during work placements across the UK.
- Writing and analyzing technical documentation.
- Participating in site visits and relevant conferences.
- Acquiring knowledge and skills pertinent to the safety pathway.
Essential Qualifications
To be eligible for this apprenticeship, candidates must possess:
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above, including mandatory subjects: Maths and English Language.
- 2 A Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above, preferably in STEM or technology-based subjects.
Evidence of qualifications will be required during the onboarding process.
Benefits
In addition to a competitive starting salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. We offer a range of benefits, including:
- Tailored learning and development opportunities.
- Flexible working arrangements.
- A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity.
- 25 days of annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
- Access to on-site facilities and support services.
We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all staff, including promoting a smoke-free workplace.
We look forward to welcoming dedicated individuals who are eager to contribute to the future of national security.
