Nursery Nurse Job Description

Bangor University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Nursery Nurse to join our team at Tír na nÓg, a nursery situated on the University's Normal Site.

Main Responsibilities
  • Programme Development: Develop and implement a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area, in conjunction with other staff.
  • Team Collaboration: Support all staff and engage in a good staff team, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Parental Support: Work with parents/carers of special needs children to ensure full integration in the setting, providing individualized support and care.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain a proper record of achievement files on your key children for parents/carers, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Communication: Liaise and support parents/carers and other family members, maintaining open and effective communication channels.
  • Professional Development: Be involved in and out of working hours activities, such as training, monthly staff meetings, and fundraising activities, to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Flexibility: Be flexible within working practices of the setting, adapting to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Supportive Role: Be prepared to help where needed, including undertaking certain domestic jobs within the setting, to ensure a smooth and efficient operation.
  • Philosophy Implementation: Work alongside the manager and staff team to ensure that the philosophy behind the project is fulfilled, promoting a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Accident Reporting: Record accidents in the accident book, ensuring the manager has initialized the report before the parent receives it, maintaining a safe and secure environment.
  • Child Safety: Constantly be aware of the needs of the children to ensure every child is collected by someone known to the setting, prioritizing their safety and well-being.
  • Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of information received, maintaining professional boundaries and discretion.
  • Role Development: Develop your role within the team, especially with regard to the key worker position, taking on new challenges and responsibilities.
Specific Childcare Tasks
  • Activity Preparation: Prepare and complete activities to suit the child's stage of development, promoting cognitive, social, and emotional growth.
  • Mealtimes: Ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Personal Care: Ensure the washing and changing of children as required, maintaining their physical and emotional well-being.
  • Comfort and Support: Provide comfort and warmth to an ill child, offering emotional support and reassurance.
  • Environment: Ensure the setting is of a high-quality environment to meet the needs of individual children from differing cultures, religious backgrounds, and varying stages of development, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
  • Professional Standards: Be aware of the high profile of the setting and uphold its standards at all times, maintaining a professional and respectful demeanor.
  • Safeguarding: Actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace, ensuring that the setting's policies and procedures are observed at all times.
Person SpecificationQualifications/Training
  • Childcare Qualification: Level 2 in childcare qualification, demonstrating a strong foundation in childcare principles and practices.
  • CPD: Positive approach to continuing professional development (CPD), committed to ongoing learning and skill enhancement.
  • Health and Safety: Awareness of and some understanding of the importance of health and safety and food hygiene in the workplace, prioritizing the well-being of children and staff.
Experience/Knowledge
  • Childcare Experience: Previous experience of caring for or working with children aged from birth to five years old in a voluntary or paid capacity, demonstrating a strong understanding of childcare principles and practices.
  • Foundation Phase Standards: Understanding of the foundation phase standards, ensuring a high-quality and inclusive education for children.
  • National Standards: Knowledge of the national standards for the regulation of childcare provision, maintaining compliance and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Commitment to Quality: Commitment to the provision of high-quality childcare, prioritizing the well-being and development of children.
  • Learning and Development: Positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through team work and training opportunities, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development.
