Expert Medical Assessor

We are seeking a highly skilled Expert Medical Assessor to join our team within the Healthcare Quality and Access Group at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis, requiring a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a risk-appropriate critical appraisal of quality, safety, and efficacy of innovative medicinal products, determining whether a product's benefits outweigh the risks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out the assessment of clinical data provided in marketing authorisation initial and variation applications, including those with novel, very complex, or sensitive issues with wide-ranging consequences.
  • Making appropriate recommendations and decisions in line with the protection of public health.
  • Promptly updating Agency, HQA, or teamwork management databases to reflect the progress of own work.
  • Preparing and presenting objective assessments or other scientific papers to expert advisory bodies.
  • Providing influential, reliable, timely, and appropriate scientific and regulatory advice to companies at meetings and in writing, reflecting contemporary regulatory guidance and relevant regulatory decisions.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Medicine and a relevant postgraduate qualification, with experience of working as a senior or leading senior medical assessor, demonstrating a consistently high level of performance in that role.

They will also be recognised by peers as having an expert level of knowledge and leading opinion in one or more relevant therapeutic or scientific areas, with evidence of being able to effectively use knowledge and skills to develop others, for example by coaching and mentoring.

Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service nationality rules, and must pass a disclosure and barring security check as well as animal rights and pro-life activism checks.
