Position Overview

The successful candidate will oversee and manage the coordination of inpatient and outpatient referrals for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), providing essential nursing support, guidance, and information to patients and their families. This role will serve as a vital link between referring physicians, clinical staff, ward personnel, and endoscopy unit teams.

The coordinator will ensure that patients and their caregivers have a comprehensive understanding of the procedures for which they have been referred.

Responsibilities include reviewing referrals and evaluating patients to determine their suitability and urgency based on established protocols and criteria, ensuring timely and appropriate scheduling.

The role is crucial for the safe, efficient, and optimal utilization of ERCP sessions. The coordinator is expected to facilitate nurse-led consent for both inpatient and outpatient procedures when applicable.

Additionally, the coordinator will document activities, outcomes, and prepare reports to assess the effectiveness of the role.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the management of the ERCP referral waiting list for endoscopic examinations, adhering to medically established protocols and criteria.
  • Assess patient suitability for endoscopic procedures.
  • Prioritize patients on the waiting list according to clinical needs, following agreed-upon protocols.
  • Identify patients who can be safely discharged and return for outpatient procedures.
  • Ensure that patients returning for outpatient procedures leave with a scheduled appointment and clear preparation instructions.
  • Act as the primary contact for all inpatients and those discharged for outpatient follow-up.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are fully prepared, both physically and mentally, for their procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate service outcomes in conjunction with departmental management.
  • Contribute to the introduction of innovative ideas and practices.
  • Support the development of nursing and healthcare services within the scope of responsibility.
  • Work with management to identify service improvements and plan for their implementation.
  • Fulfill all delegated responsibilities effectively.
  • Promote and implement innovative practices as necessary.
  • Participate in the on-call rota as part of the gastrointestinal bleed service.
  • Lead ERCP lists and procedures.
  • Train new staff members in ERCP protocols.
