Job Overview

The Chief of Professional Services plays a pivotal role akin to that of a Chief Operating Officer, tasked with shaping and implementing the strategic vision of the University across all operational facets.

This position holds the responsibility for leading the professional support teams, ensuring exceptional service delivery that aligns with the University’s strategic objectives.

Reporting directly to the Vice Principal/Head of University, this role encompasses the overall coordination of strategic planning, policy formulation, resource allocation, and infrastructure enhancement.

A significant area of focus is the strategic management and optimization of the University’s estate.

As a vital member of the University leadership team, the Chief of Professional Services participates in the University Management Group (UMG) and represents the institution in key committee meetings while advocating for University interests with external stakeholders.

This role entails direct oversight of the professional service departments within the University, and through the leadership of Professional Services Heads, encompasses all staff responsible for delivering comprehensive support services across the academic spectrum.

Key Responsibilities 1.

Provide visionary leadership in the evolution of professional support services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, customer-centric, and efficient services that support the implementation of strategic priorities and operational plans.

2.

Oversee the formulation, execution, and assessment of the University’s strategic plans, ensuring that objectives are clearly defined, aligned with overall institutional goals, and consistently evaluated.

3.

Offer strategic counsel and support to the Vice Principal/Head of University regarding leadership, management, and development initiatives, enhancing the efficiency and impact of the University.

4.

Contribute to the strategic development of University policies and operational plans, ensuring alignment with governance standards and compliance with regulatory requirements.

5.

Drive the strategic enhancement and operational efficiency of the University estate.

6.

Manage the University’s budget and revenue streams in accordance with policies established by the Vice Principal/Head of University.

7.

Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of professional, technical, and administrative staff to ensure effective service delivery across all academic and resource functions.

8.

Play a crucial role in conducting University-wide business process evaluations and implementing effective, cost-efficient action plans to ensure comprehensive support services.

9.

Oversee the implementation of the University’s Internationalisation strategy, ensuring alignment of services and resources with institutional ambitions.

10.

Engage in the organization and enhancement of professional services across the University as a member of the Professional Services Group.

11.

Execute established University strategies and policies by collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders.

12.

Represent the University in an ambassadorial capacity with various external organizations, fostering relationships with professional bodies.

13.

Lead and manage specific projects as directed by the Head of University, including chairing key committees.

14.

Act as a deputy for the Vice Principal/Head of University when necessary.


Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:

A1 A degree or postgraduate qualification, or equivalent, alongside extensive relevant experience.

A2 Comprehensive knowledge of administrative systems and extensive experience in change and project management methodologies.

A3 In-depth understanding of key funding agencies and potential industrial partnerships.

A4 Familiarity with the specialized laboratory and equipment requirements for teaching and research.

A5 Strong grasp of governance principles.

A6 Awareness of the challenges facing higher education institutions.

Employment Terms

The salary is competitive within the Management, Professional and Administrative, Senior Administrative Group, level 10. This is a full-time, open-ended position (35 hours per week).
