Position: Fire Hydrant Technician
Salary: £25,878 - £29,439
Hours: 36.25 per week
Contract: Permanent
Location: Within Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service Boundary
Your Role:
We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team as Fire Hydrant Technicians. This vital position involves the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of fire hydrants throughout Greater Manchester, contributing to our goal of fostering safer and healthier communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct inspections, testing, and maintenance of fire hydrants according to a scheduled plan in assigned areas.
- Document inspection results accurately using both traditional and digital systems (training will be provided).
- Work autonomously while efficiently managing your workload, and collaborate with fire service teams to focus on high-risk zones.
- Engage in physically demanding tasks, including ground work, lifting equipment, and handling silt bags (up to 22 kg), often multiple times daily.
- Operate a company vehicle to reach hydrants in various locations such as roads, pavements, parking areas, and open spaces.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work throughout the year, in all weather conditions, with significant independent working. The role consists of approximately 70% physical tasks and 30% administrative duties, which can be performed on-site or at a fire station office.
- Inspect around 20 hydrants daily, which may require entering and exiting your vehicle up to 200 times weekly.
Training and Development:
- Comprehensive training includes:
- Driving GMFRS vehicles
- Health and safety protocols
- New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) certification
About You:
We are in search of motivated candidates for the Fire Hydrant Technician role. The ideal applicant will possess a strong aptitude for learning and understanding the technical aspects of fire hydrants and water systems. A full UK Driving Licence (manual & automatic) is essential, as you will be driving a GMFRS vehicle. Proficiency in digital tools, including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) and mapping applications (Google Maps), is required. Strong communication skills and literacy are vital.
You must be able to plan workloads considering traffic conditions and seasonal changes while remaining adaptable to address urgent issues. Self-motivation is crucial, as you will need to work outside of standard hours to complete inspections effectively. A good level of fitness and overall health is necessary due to the physical demands of the position.
Desirable qualifications include a working knowledge of hydrant testing and operations, familiarity with the Greater Manchester road network, and experience with water service providers. Candidates will receive support and mentorship throughout their development, ensuring you are well-equipped to excel in this role.
