About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Engineer to join our Estates Maintenance team at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering specialist engineering activities across the trust, ensuring compliance with safety standards and legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver specialist engineering services to all wards and departments within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Represent the Specialist Engineering team at designated Trust Governance meetings.
  • Support supervisors in ensuring competency is maintained across the in-house team by delivering specialist engineering training and mentoring.
  • Support in the development of technicians and apprentices, compiling and monitoring training programs.
  • Manage key specialist engineering service contracts and act as a lead in designated service areas.
  • Maintain, operate, and review pre-planned maintenance programs related to specialist engineering and complex technical subjects.
  • Contribute to the achievement of good corporate governance throughout the trust.
  • Develop the culture of responsiveness, ownership, and customer care amongst Estates staff.
  • Work efficiently using complex technology to work within Service Level Agreements and key performance indicators.
  • Provide technical expertise and training on all aspects of Estates Maintenance function.
  • Monitor and measure performance to ensure a value-for-money service.
  • Act and lead in a professional manner, demonstrating the trust's values when undertaking tasks and duties in contact with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Contribute to the development of the CAFM system, ensuring effective change management processes are implemented.
  • Support the management of external specialist engineering contractors and staff carrying out work on the trust's assets and buildings.
  • Deliver training and support the development of competent persons within your specialist area.
  • Undertake Estates specialist engineering audits and condition surveys, reporting into Estates Governance and senior teams.
  • Contribute to the estates risk register, ensuring an accurate view of operational risk and backlog maintenance requirements.
  • Manage specialist engineering projects designed to improve or maintain compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Take the operational lead on Capital improvement projects, defining requirements, supporting decisions, and ensuring a suitable product is handed over into operational management.
  • Undertake roles of Authorised Person in accordance with the requirements of Healthcare Technical Memorandum.
  • Undertake training of Estates Technicians, as designated by the training/competency matrix.
  • Support the development of the trust's CAFM system, utilising the system to ensure a robust management system of records and assets.
Requirements
  • Qualified to Degree Level in Engineering/Building Services or HNC/HND Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with significant management experience.
  • Extensive experience in operational maintenance in a Mechanical, Electrical, or Building service discipline or equivalent significant experience.
  • Membership of a Professional Institution (e.g., IHEEM, IEE, IET, CIBSE).
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • A recognised training qualification/apprenticeship in Electrical or Mechanical Services.
Desirable
  • Legionella awareness L8 - Responsible Person.
  • NEBOSH - Level 3 Certificate.
  • Appointments as an Authorised/Competent person.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to interpret and make judgments across a wide range of highly complex estates issues.
  • Ability to understand and interpret legislation and develop work plans and policies.
  • Ability to react to unplanned events/emergencies in a controlled planned manner.
  • Ability to undertake performance monitoring, fault diagnosis using fine tools and equipment.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible as needs arise and ability to work overtime at short notice.
