Role Overview: The Biomedical Support Worker plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of various sections within the department, delivering precise and timely results to our users.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in routine activities that encompass a diverse range of equipment and manual techniques.
  • Adhere strictly to current Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and regulations to maintain a consistently high-quality service.
  • Oversee the daily maintenance and proper operation of equipment in alignment with laboratory and manufacturer SOPs.
  • Assist in the management of digital pathology equipment.
  • Document specimens meticulously, including the entry of computerized records.
  • Handle, process, and dispose of histological and cytological materials responsibly.
  • Support staff during specimen dissection by taking detailed notes, preparing additional cassettes, and verifying patient information.
  • Maintain an organized laboratory filing system, including the retrieval of off-site storage and the disposal of selected materials.
  • Coordinate the sending and receiving of referral work to external providers.
  • Prepare and organize cases for multidisciplinary team (MDT) review.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a safe, efficient, and effective service.

Confidentiality and Compliance:

Uphold confidentiality at all times concerning patients, staff, and the Trust, in accordance with departmental and Trust policies.

Comply with the Data Protection Act, ensuring discretion and avoiding unauthorized disclosure of confidential information.

Communication: Liaise effectively with all pathology staff and other Trust members to maintain high standards of communication and cooperation.

IT Proficiency: Be proficient in using the pathology IT system and report any issues to senior staff or the IT helpdesk.

Safety Standards: Work within the Trust and departmental safety policies, reporting any hazards to the departmental safety representative or senior staff.

Take proactive measures to promote personal safety and the safety of others.
