Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Specialist Nurse to join our team at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS FT. The successful candidate will work closely with the neurodevelopmental pathway team to develop, implement, and monitor services for children, young people, and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work autonomously across Birmingham, taking the lead in preliminary assessments of new referrals using agreed assessment tools and analysis of resulting information.
  • Undertake and record observations within schools, clinics, and home settings.
  • Act as an Advanced Nurse Prescriber for ADHD-related medicines, in line with NMC, NICE, and national guidelines.
  • Implement a family-centred care approach, capturing the voice of the child and promoting involvement in decision-making.
  • Work closely with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive, inclusive, and expert assessment of children referred with symptoms and comorbidities.
  • Be the first point of contact for queries, giving advice and signposting to outside agencies in supporting children, young people, their families/carers, schools, and other professionals.
  • Work with and liaise with parents and carers to resolve any complaints or concerns at local level before escalating to team leader.
  • Participate in regular audit and review of prescribing practice and medicines management, using the National Prescribing Centre Competency framework.
  • Work within Trust policies that impact upon non-medical prescribing practice, exercising independent or supplementary prescribing rights using guidelines and protocols.
  • Provide direct expert nursing judgement and treatment interventions based on highly developed skills and knowledge regarding clinical management and educational management of children and young people with ADHD.
  • Work closely with families, schools, and other agencies, using negotiation skills to encourage implementation of behaviour management programmes and administration of medicine.
  • Deliver parent education programmes, using a range of training approaches and communication styles to deliver complex information that meets individual needs.
  • Effectively manage ongoing care of children diagnosed with ADHD, using the care pathway framework to continue the collection of activity and outcomes as part of clinical governance.
  • Coordinate patient transition from team caseload to adult ADHD services, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Utilise highly developed interpersonal skills to develop excellent working relations with all parties involved, including young people and their families, to achieve effective communication.
  • Work within scope of practice and competencies to meet caseload/service user/community needs, maintaining contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC guidelines and trust Clinical records Policy.
  • Provide clinical leadership, consultation, support, and supervision to other members of the ADHD service and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Influence and contribute to the delivery of clinical governance and quality improvement agenda within the service.
  • Represent the team at multiagency or professional meetings as required and participate in case conferences where appropriate.
  • Participate in regular audit of the service and participate in research projects as appropriate to promote and implement evidence-based practice.
  • Assist in the induction programme for new staff as a mentor, so that new staff are aware of the role.
  • Contribute to review and implementation of Trust policies and procedures in relation to the ADHD service.
  • Escalate operational or staffing concerns to Team Leader, Operational Manager, or Head of Service.
  • Maintain professional development and maintain professional registration alongside requirements for NMC revalidation.
  • Access regular clinical supervision from a medical mentor.
  • Access continuing professional development opportunities relating to non-medical prescribing role.
  • Provide a high level of skills and competencies and work towards development of areas of clinical expertise within the field of ADHD, complimenting other members of the team.
  • Identify own learning needs and be responsible for own continuing professional development.
  • Maintain and update professional knowledge and skills in areas of practice.
  • Undertake mandatory training in line with Trust Policy and attend updates and study days as appropriate to the post.
Requirements
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field, such as ADHD or child and adolescent mental health.
  • Experience of working with children and young people with ADHD and their families.
  • Advanced Nurse Practitioner qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience of prescribing and medicines management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of NMC, NICE, and national guidelines related to ADHD and child and adolescent mental health.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records.
  • Ability to work within Trust policies and procedures.
