Position Summary

We are seeking a meticulous and intellectually driven Meteorological Researcher to become a vital member of CGG's Geoscience New Ventures team. This role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop and refine a weather model evaluation pipeline for our cutting-edge climate model, designed for seamless predictions from global to mesoscale at annual timescales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement global weather hindcast experiments targeting various hazardous weather scenarios.
  • Collaborate with team members to establish a robust evaluation pipeline that encompasses general global performance metrics and specific situational analyses.
  • Identify potential avenues for model enhancement and improvement.
  • Document model performance and findings in a comprehensive white paper.
  • Engage with clients regarding model evaluation and their business needs related to weather hazards, supported by our Business Development team during meetings and presentations.

This position is a fixed-term contract, with the potential for renewal. It is particularly suited for PhD students seeking industry experience or recent PhD graduates aiming to transition into the industry.

Qualifications

PhD degree in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or a related field, or an MSc degree in the same disciplines with current enrollment in a PhD program.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proficient understanding of numerical weather prediction models and their evaluation, such as WRF, IFS, UFS, etc.
  • Strong programming skills in FORTRAN within a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Experience with the Python data processing ecosystem, including libraries like numpy and xarray.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven weather forecast model evaluation is advantageous.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial mindset, with a collaborative and agile approach.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.
