Job Purpose

To deliver engaging demonstrations and instruction to undergraduate students, ensuring they grasp practical equipment usage, experiments, techniques, and processes aligned with specific learning objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of senior staff, conduct demonstrations and provide individual or group instruction on practical equipment operation, experiments, workshops, and processes for undergraduate level 1 and 2 courses.
  • Offer support and guidance to students actively engaged in practical exercises.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment by adhering to health and safety protocols and promptly reporting any concerns to the course organizer.
  • Ensure laboratory areas are well-maintained and address technical issues with equipment, seeking assistance when necessary.
  • Contribute to the development of teaching materials and workbooks, enhancing the learning experience for students.
  • Provide factual feedback on student performance and any challenges encountered during demonstrations to the course organizer.
  • Prepare all necessary materials for demonstrations, exercises, and sessions prior to commencement.
  • Actively participate in continuing professional development activities to refine teaching skills and enhance the learning experience.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by the course organizer or Head of School, contributing to the overall success of the department.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in level 4 or 5 of an MSci program at the University of Glasgow in a relevant subject or cognate discipline, or equivalent. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent, with experience in a similar role.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Possess advanced knowledge of the relevant subject area.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in assembling and utilizing equipment (including software packages) pertinent to experiments, exercises, and processes.
  • Exhibit the ability to clearly explain concepts and techniques, tailoring explanations to the specific needs of each student group.
  • Possess effective communication skills for clear and concise instruction.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent qualification relevant to the teaching area.
  • Understand and adhere to relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the University's published values and professional behaviors.
