As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, your role will be pivotal in aiding students who encounter difficulties related to their social, emotional, and mental health. Your duties will encompass:

  • Personalized Assistance: Collaborating with students who have SEMH requirements, delivering customized support to enhance their educational engagement. This includes providing one-on-one help and facilitating small group sessions aimed at developing coping mechanisms and encouraging positive behaviors.
  • Behavioral Support: Aiding in the management of classroom conduct by applying specific strategies and interventions tailored for students with SEMH challenges. You will contribute to fostering a nurturing and encouraging learning atmosphere that promotes emotional well-being.
  • Emotional and Social Growth: Assisting in the emotional and social development of students by promoting positive interactions and aiding in the enhancement of their self-esteem and confidence. Your mentorship will guide students through their difficulties, creating a sense of security and belonging.
  • Collaboration with Educational Staff: Partnering with teachers, SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), and other support personnel to ensure the needs of SEMH students are effectively addressed. You will play a role in the planning and execution of individualized learning strategies and support frameworks.
  • Progress Monitoring: Maintaining comprehensive records of student progress and behavior, providing consistent feedback to educators and support staff. Your insights will be vital in assessing the effectiveness of interventions and making necessary adjustments.
  • Pastoral Support: Delivering pastoral care to students, assisting them in navigating personal challenges. You will be an essential figure in ensuring students feel emotionally and academically supported.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with children or young individuals, particularly those with SEMH needs.
  • A solid understanding of the challenges faced by SEMH students and a dedication to fostering their development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building effective relationships with both students and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience, along with a constructive approach to engaging with students exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively within a team and adhere to the guidance provided by educational and support staff.
