Ilford, Greater London, United Kingdom Barnardos Full time

English Curriculum Coordinator

Employment Type: Full-time or part-time options available

Compensation: Competitive salary based on Main/Upper Teaching Scale, with additional TLR 2 and SEN allowance.

Overview: Barnardo's operates a successful non-maintained day special school catering to students aged 7-19, focusing on those with Social Emotional and Mental Health challenges, Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Speech and Language difficulties, and related learning needs.

We seek a passionate, innovative, and motivating educator for a distinctive role in special education. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of the English curriculum and relevant assessment criteria up to Key Stage 5. This position requires a unique skill set, as it encompasses both primary and secondary educational frameworks. We are looking for an individual eager to develop confidence in navigating the diverse assessment criteria and curriculum demands.

The successful candidate will be a resilient educator capable of managing the complexities of a broad curriculum and leading the English department across the institution. Experience in special education is not a prerequisite; however, Barnardo's offers an excellent environment for professional growth and career advancement.

Our curriculum spans key stages 2-3 and 4-5. In key stages 2 and 3, we emphasize foundational reading and writing skills, adhering to the National Curriculum while tailoring our approach to meet the diverse needs of our students. In key stages 4-5, students pursue various accredited qualifications, including Entry Level Certificates, Functional Skills, and GCSEs. We are in search of an inspiring leader to guide the department and collaborate with staff and students across all key stages. We are open to flexible working arrangements for the right candidate.

We value educators who can adopt a flexible and solution-oriented approach when teaching students who face challenges and vulnerabilities. A genuine passion for positively impacting the education and lives of young individuals is essential, as is the ability to foster supportive and constructive relationships. Candidates should be team-oriented, resilient, and motivated by challenges, with a creative mindset. Commitment to Barnardo's principles and values is required.

The ideal candidate will be an inspiring educator capable of delivering a tailored curriculum to students who may be disengaged, possess underdeveloped literacy and numeracy skills, and experience low self-esteem. Physical fitness is necessary to conduct Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) holds and physical restraints, following appropriate training. You will be part of a dedicated team that requires a proactive and adaptable approach. The school accommodates a maximum of 100 students across four key stages.

Benefits of joining Barnardo's:

  • Small class sizes with high staff-to-student ratios
  • Flexibility in curriculum design to cater to student needs
  • Extensive professional development opportunities and in-house training programs
  • Complimentary school meals
  • Free on-site parking
  • Discretionary sick leave policy
  • Employee Assistance Program focusing on health and well-being
  • Staff benefits platform

We encourage visits to our institution.

When applying, please highlight your skills, knowledge, and experience in relation to the Person Specification and Job Description, considering the context of the service described.

Barnardo's Schools are dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, expecting all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Our rigorous recruitment processes prioritize child safety and welfare at every stage, ensuring thorough scrutiny in pre-employment checks. Applicants must be prepared to undergo relevant pre-employment checks, including reference verification prior to interviews and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for the successful candidate.

As part of your application, please provide comprehensive details of your employment history since leaving secondary education, starting with your most recent position and working backward, including reasons for leaving. Include any voluntary work or training, explaining any gaps in employment, education, or training.

For more information about our commitment to safeguarding and our pre-employment checks, please refer to our applicant information sheet.
