Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Counsel to join its European product wordings team. This role will report to the Chief Counsel, Product Wordings, Europe, and collaborate with the global Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Governance teams to support BHSI teammates in Europe on various Executive and Professional lines underwriting queries.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop new insurance products in Executive and Professional Lines, working closely with Underwriters to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Amend insurance documentation in response to legal and regulatory changes, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Draft, negotiate, and amend policy wordings and related documentation, such as quotation documents and IPID, as required.
  • Lead negotiations with business partners and brokers regarding wordings, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Stay up-to-date with legal and regulatory developments, informing Underwriters of these changes and arranging training as needed.
  • Instruct external counsel on specialist topics, as required.
  • Deliver training and coaching to Underwriters and Claims colleagues to improve wordings and ensure compliance.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory developments and feed these into drafting and legal advice, ensuring BHSI's products remain compliant and competitive.
  • Respond to demands for legal support from Underwriters, prioritizing work in line with business objectives and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales with a minimum of 5 years' insurance wordings/coverage experience.
  • Technical insurance knowledge across one or more product lines, including experience of international and multinational contracts.
  • Knowledge of insurance regulatory and licensing considerations, as well as general legal knowledge of topics such as GDPR and insurance distribution.
  • Understanding of the London and European company markets and the Lloyd's market.
  • Proficiency with SharePoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Fluent English; additional European language desirable but not essential.
