SEMH Teaching Assistant Job Description

GSL Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs in an educational setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized support to students with SEMH needs, ensuring they remain focused and engaged in their learning.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's needs.
  • Offer one-to-one and small group support to help students manage their emotions and behaviors effectively.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, promoting their social and emotional development.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitor and record student progress, reporting any concerns to the SENCO or relevant staff members.
  • Support the delivery of tailored interventions and strategies to help students succeed academically and socially.
  • Promote positive behavior management techniques in line with school policies.
Essential Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of SEMH and associated challenges, along with strategies to support affected students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in managing challenging behaviors and situations.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and adaptability.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
