This position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. In addition to analyzing and commissioning scientific data related to the natural environment, understanding policy frameworks is crucial for evaluating governmental actions in relation to their commitments and targets. Addressing chemical pollution is a priority for the OEP, and this role will be instrumental in gathering evidence to inform future actions.

Key Responsibilities

This role presents an opportunity to influence the safe and sustainable management of chemicals, focusing on critical challenges within the hazard and risk assessment frameworks.

The successful candidate will leverage their expertise to evaluate the chemical policy and regulatory landscape in either Great Britain or Northern Ireland, assessing its effectiveness in managing hazardous substances. The focus will be on identifying barriers and opportunities for enhancing national implementation strategies.

Key duties include:

  • Possessing a thorough understanding of the current and future chemical regulatory environment in England or Northern Ireland.
  • Identifying chemical pressures of concern and understanding their environmental pathways and exposure risks.
  • Grasping the processes involved in the development of domestic public policy and evaluating the impacts of governmental actions.
  • Providing subject matter expertise in chemical legislation, including REACH and related regulations.
  • Translating analytical findings into actionable policy recommendations for improving regulatory frameworks.
  • Engaging with a diverse range of experts, stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Effectively communicating assessments and recommendations through written reports and presentations.

Qualifications

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field such as environmental science, natural science, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of EU and/or UK chemical policies and regulations.
  • Proven research skills and experience, including data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to operate at the intersection of science and policy, utilizing evidence to inform decisions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying complex analyses to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
