Exciting Opportunity for Aspiring Gardeners
We are pleased to announce a fantastic opportunity for individuals interested in horticulture to join our esteemed Grounds Teams as an Apprentice Gardener. This is a comprehensive 2-year training program facilitated by BCA (Berkshire College of Agriculture), which includes attending classes one day each week.
Role Overview
The Apprentice Gardener will play a vital role in supporting the cultivation and upkeep of Eton College's grounds to an exceptional standard. Under the guidance of the Gardens Supervisor and Deputy Grounds Manager, you will assist in implementing garden plans and work programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn to identify and manage weeds, pests, and diseases effectively;
- Prepare soil for new and existing planting schemes;
- Execute specific projects as assigned;
- Safely operate equipment and machinery used in horticultural maintenance;
- Adhere to current Health and Safety regulations and best practices in line with the College's Health and Safety Policy;
- Ensure personal safety and the safety of others, reporting any hazardous situations or defective equipment promptly;
- Perform additional duties as required;
- Engage in regulated activities, ensuring adherence to safeguarding procedures and providing safe care;
- Understand and implement Child Protection procedures;
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within the workplace;
- Comply with confidentiality procedures and legislation.
Working Hours
- Your working hours will be from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday, including a 30-minute lunch break, with one day dedicated to college attendance.
- This position requires commitment throughout the year, with 52 weeks of work.
- You will receive 21 days of holiday annually.
Qualifications and Training
- Level 2 Horticulture Operative Apprenticeship Certificate;
- Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (Ofqual registered);
- Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Pesticides;
- Level 2 Award in Safe Application of Pesticide Using Handheld Equipment;
- Abrasive Wheel Machines Course.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate should possess:
- GCSE English and Maths Grade 4 or above, or a willingness to undertake functional skills;
- A genuine interest in horticulture;
- Some prior gardening experience;
- Familiarity with using mowers, strimmers, or other gardening machinery;
- A valid UK driving license is desirable.
