We are excited to announce a remarkable opportunity with Macdonald & Company, seeking a Principal Planner to enhance our team on a long-term contract.

About the Role

The organization is in search of a highly skilled Principal Planner to join our team temporarily, assisting a Project Manager and Planning Technician in delivering high-quality and well-designed significant Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).

To excel in this position, candidates must possess extensive planning experience, exceptional organizational skills, and strong negotiation abilities. Previous engagement with developers, agents, and consultants on large-scale projects is essential. A genuine interest in promoting sustainable development and fostering a long-term legacy, social value, and community benefits from NSIPs and major schemes is crucial.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the engagement process to develop corporate responses for the Development Consent Order stage of various Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
  • Maximize the organization's influence to shape and secure developer contributions for strategic and complex Development Consent Orders, collaborating closely with senior leadership, local planning authorities, and external agencies.
  • Conduct technical and professional analysis, negotiation, and assessment of complex development proposals, providing expert advice and recommendations to ensure evidence-based decisions.
  • Represent the organization on financial and infrastructure matters, leading negotiations on intricate DCO proposals to support strategic planning initiatives.
  • Prepare briefing notes, reports, and recommendations for senior leadership, ensuring the implementation of resolutions and decisions.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to advance planning control matters and provide guidance on planning issues, ensuring thorough appraisal and evaluation of DCOs.
  • Coordinate and present evidence at public inquiries and examinations to defend the organization's planning decisions as necessary.
  • Lead key elements of planning projects and deliver specific outcomes using project management methodologies to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery.
  • Define specific individual and shared targets annually within the performance management framework.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Applicants must hold MRTPI qualification.
  • Familiarity with NSIPs and DCOs is highly advantageous.
  • Strong negotiation skills combined with excellent stakeholder management experience are essential.
