Grangemouth, Falkirk, United Kingdom Scottish Canals Full time

Scottish Canals serves as the steward of the nation's canal system and its adjacent properties. Our mission is to enhance the canal network to provide enduring benefits for individuals and communities; honoring their industrial legacy, ensuring they offer high-quality green and blue spaces for the public, and aiding Scotland's efforts in combating climate change.

Our achievements stem from recognizing the value of every team member's contributions - we care, we innovate, and we collaborate to provide a diverse range of activities from boating and paddling to walking and recreation, while continually enhancing the offerings of our canals for visitors and local communities. We also engage in partnerships with stakeholders to foster a wealthier, fairer, greener, and more resilient Scotland.

We currently present an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Manager to join our Engineering and Infrastructure Division within the Operations Directorate. In this role, you will oversee the Lowlands Maintenance Teams, which include Civil and Mechanical & Electrical maintenance, ensuring all aspects of maintenance activities are executed effectively within the Engineering and Infrastructure Division. This position is pivotal in managing projects and maintaining all Lowlands assets along the canal network. You will play a crucial role in the ongoing upkeep of these assets while collaborating with a broader team to ensure the successful delivery of Capital, Third Party funded, and Revenue projects for current and future multi-year investment opportunities.

The position is offered on a permanent basis, with a competitive starting salary. Working hours are set at 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Scottish Canals provides a generous annual leave package of 28 days, plus 10 public holidays, along with enhanced sick pay, discounted shopping vouchers, a health cash plan, and a contributory pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all facets of asset maintenance related to the waterways, including Mechanical, Electrical, Control systems, Hydraulics, Civil, Construction, Piling, and Dredging.
  • Support Scottish Canals' objectives to preserve our heritage and build a sustainable future by effectively managing the network infrastructure and ensuring the delivery of an agreed works program through team management and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to the development of local emergency and health and safety plans.
  • Lead by example, fostering a culture of safety among colleagues, volunteers, and customers. Adhere to health and safety policies and standards, conduct risk assessments, and investigate incidents.
  • Ensure the delivery of maintenance activities and project execution aligns with the Asset Management Strategy and associated plans.
  • Guarantee compliance with all relevant legislation and quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with statutory bodies and local communities to ensure adherence to mandatory standards.
  • Manage the execution of agreed work programs, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery through effective resource utilization.
  • Ensure all tasks meet safety, customer service, financial, environmental, and heritage standards, as well as organizational policies and service level agreements.
  • Engage with the Engineering Team and other departments to ensure safe and effective delivery of planned works.
  • Identify and address the training needs of team members, emphasizing the completion of Minimum Safety Learning Standards.
  • Supervise subcontractors and lower-value framework contracts in line with Contract Management Standards.

Qualifications and Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum HNC/D qualification in Mechanical Electrical Engineering (preferred) or Civil Engineering, with proven experience in managing M&E Assets.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Accredited Project Manager status is desirable - NEC ECC.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel at an advanced level.
  • Experience with various management and financial software packages, ensuring functionality is maximized for daily operations.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and best practices.

Qualities & Abilities Required:

  • Ability to engage with diverse groups, clarify complex issues, and build effective partnerships to share knowledge and insights.
  • Open, honest, and transparent approach, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Team player with the capacity to manage changing circumstances and demands.
  • Confident in skills and abilities, capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible and adaptable work style, ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
