Position Overview

The Linux Platform Engineering division at Millennium Management is tasked with designing and implementing both cloud-based and on-premise Linux infrastructures that support the majority of the organization's computational tasks. This team collaborates with various departments to empower engineers, quantitative analysts, researchers, and developers to effectively utilize our Linux environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Efficiently manage systems at scale through standardization, automation, rigorous testing, and comprehensive monitoring.
  • Establish and uphold development standards for source control, testing, and continuous integration related to infrastructure, operating systems, patches, and configuration management.
  • Create self-service deployment pipelines for infrastructure and platforms that developers and portfolio managers can seamlessly integrate with.
  • Engage with business stakeholders to regularly reassess project priorities while achieving both immediate and long-term goals.
  • Formulate well-defined processes for evaluating and integrating new technologies to fulfill both business and technical requirements.
  • Promote the reduction of operational tasks through automation and self-service solutions.
  • Enhance resource utilization through detailed metrics and reporting.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of Linux systems administration, networking, and security, including automated configuration and orchestration across systems.
  • Preferred experience with configuration management tools such as Chef, Puppet, Salt, or Ansible.
  • Familiarity with container technologies and services (e.g., Docker, Podman, Kubernetes) is highly advantageous, along with experience in build automation testing tools.
  • Experience with bare metal servers and public cloud platforms, particularly AWS, is a plus.
  • Knowledge of software-defined storage (e.g., Lustre, Ceph) and appliance-based storage solutions (e.g., NetApp, Isilon).
  • Strong programming and scripting abilities, with proficiency in BASH, Python, Ruby, Java, and C/C++ being a significant advantage.
  • Deep understanding of Linux authentication and authorization frameworks (e.g., PAM, SSSD, NIS, Kerberos, SSH, Sudo).
  • Experience in large collaborative software projects, including source control and software development lifecycle strategies.
  • Proficiency in interfacing with REST APIs and developing them is highly desired.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills for both hardware and operating systems.
  • Experience in optimizing systems for high throughput and low latency.
  • Familiarity with building and debugging kernels.
  • Understanding of networking protocols including TCP, UDP, HTTP, DNS, DHCP, NFS, NTP, PTP, and the ability to utilize packet captures for troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of encryption, PKI, and certificate/key management is beneficial.
  • A collaborative team player with a strong commitment to assisting colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
