As a Senior Psychiatric Consultant specializing in Geriatric Care within the NHS framework, you will play a pivotal role in addressing the needs of our elderly patients through the provision of exceptional mental health services.

Leading the inpatient multidisciplinary team, you will operate in a cutting-edge mental health facility, delivering specialized clinical support to older adults requiring intensive inpatient treatment. Your collaboration with diverse clinical and professional teams will be essential in providing comprehensive care, which includes conducting thorough assessments for new admissions and overseeing their treatment plans to ensure safe transitions back to community settings.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will be tasked with performing assessments and developing treatment strategies for patients admitted from community settings. This role encompasses managing a specialized ward dedicated to older adults with complex care needs. As a key Consultant in Geriatric Psychiatry, you will work in tandem with various members of the multidisciplinary team, serving as the Responsible Clinician for patients, including those detained under mental health legislation, necessitating a robust understanding of relevant legal frameworks.

You will be expected to inspire and guide the multidisciplinary team, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment that enhances staff morale and productivity. Regular ward rounds will be conducted to ensure clear communication regarding patient assessments and management plans. Additionally, you will provide mentorship and training to junior medical staff and actively contribute to the clinical operations of the team, leading initiatives aimed at service enhancement.

Job Duties

Regular evaluations of inpatients will be necessary to assess treatment efficacy, and the post holder will function within integrated teams comprising both health and social services professionals. Close collaboration with social services will be vital to ensure effective discharge planning and timely communication with primary care providers.

In instances where patients from General Adult teams require inpatient care, you will provide necessary assessments and treatment while awaiting transfer to appropriate facilities, if required.

The post holder will oversee the comprehensive assessment, management, and discharge planning for inpatients, working in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team that includes social services, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and primary care.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in Geriatric Psychiatry
  • Approval as a Section 12 Doctor and Approved Clinician status
  • Good standing with the GMC
Transport Requirements
  • Possession of a valid UK driving license and willingness to use personal vehicle for work-related travel
Educational Background
  • Medical degree (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent)
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent, with extensive training in Geriatric Psychiatry
  • Additional qualifications in medical education or clinical research are advantageous
Clinical Expertise and Experience
  • Strong clinical acumen in the specialty
  • Proficient in employing a bio-psycho-social approach to patient care
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Adept at managing clinical complexities
  • Experience in similar roles at a relevant level
  • Knowledge of IT systems and their application in clinical settings

Salary range: £99,532 to £131,964 annually, plus additional benefits.
