Job Overview

As a vital member of the dispensary team, you will engage in a variety of pharmacy-related tasks, including managing prescriptions for both inpatients and outpatients, as well as handling discharge medications.

Team and Department Insights

Your primary role will be within the dispensary team, playing a crucial part in delivering a thorough pharmacy service to various hospital wards, community healthcare facilities, and other patient care environments.

Key Responsibilities

- Address routine inquiries and resolve basic issues from patients and medical wards regarding medication availability.

- Conduct daily inventory checks on designated items as part of the department's ongoing stock management process. Ensure that all items are within their expiry dates and report any inconsistencies to the dispensary.

- Maintain adequate stock levels in the dispensary by organizing and storing goods received from pharmacy purchasing.

- Replenish necessary packaging materials for the dispensing process, including bottles, cartons, and bags.

- When required by the Dispensary Manager, assist with essential tasks in the reception area, which includes receiving prescriptions and directing electronic, fax, and postal requests to the appropriate departments.

Detailed Job Responsibilities

- Execute dispensary tasks: dispense medications for inpatients and those being discharged, along with related duties.

- Dispense medications under the guidance of a Pharmacy Technician, including the provision of controlled substances, while ensuring proper record-keeping in line with standard operating procedures.

- Communicate with the pharmacy purchasing service regarding the availability of out-of-stock medications and related supplies to ensure the timely completion of prescriptions.

- Provide an efficient and cooperative service to patients, their representatives, staff, and other visitors to the Pharmacy Department by addressing their needs directly or referring them to the appropriate personnel when necessary.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Good general education; Grade C or above at GCSE in English and Mathematics.
  • Ability to pursue NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or an equivalent dispensing qualification.

Desirable

  • Grade C or above in additional subjects, including sciences.
  • Experience equivalent to NVQ Level 3 competency or an in-house competency assessment.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the NHS and the role of Pharmacy.
  • Familiarity with Health & Safety legislation and risk management.
  • Experience in healthcare provision.
  • Background in hospital pharmacy.
  • Previous pharmacy experience, including dispensing in hospital or community settings.
