About the Role

We are seeking a new Strategic Business Development Lead to enhance our organization. This is a mid-senior level position, reporting to the Deputy Head of Business Development.

The ideal candidate will be tasked with driving sustainable growth across our Equal Education (EE) and Green Economies and Infrastructure (GEI) Portfolios, collaborating closely with technical portfolio leaders.

We are looking for individuals with substantial experience in business development or sales, preferably within the international development arena.


ROLE OVERVIEW

Appointment term:
12-month parental cover, Fixed term with potential for extension

Remuneration Package:
This position is Band D with a salary range of £43,000 - £55,000. The salary upon appointment will reflect experience and align with team members in similar roles.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


This role of Strategic Business Development Lead is situated within a pioneering and expanding international social development organization.

As a Strategic Business Development Lead, you will identify and secure new opportunities for the organization.

You will facilitate effective bid development processes in collaboration with technical team members, as well as finance, HR, and program teams, to produce high-quality proposals in a timely manner.

Business Development – Portfolio Management

  • Serve as the BD Lead on specific technical portfolios, acting as a liaison between the BD team and the technical team to proactively identify, track, and secure work in that technical area.
  • Maintain precise reporting of all sales activities.
  • Manage a pipeline of opportunities.
  • Participate in donor market meetings for relevant bids, engage in donor consultations, and network with stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Facilitate decision-making among stakeholders to determine whether to pursue bids.
  • Lead pre-positioning efforts to identify partners and develop our approach for new opportunities.
  • Negotiate consortium roles on bids and establish a teaming agreement.
  • Oversee our response to direct inquiries from clients seeking consultancy and research services.
  • Regularly meet with existing partners/clients to foster relationships and proactively identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Develop relationships with potential new partners and clients.
  • Actively engage in building and maintaining relationships with SDDirect's Associates and network of consultants.
  • Own and develop marketing materials that highlight portfolio work.
Bid Production

  • Lead and manage the development of technical and commercial proposals (including budget), collaborating closely with colleagues from our technical, project management, and finance teams. For larger bids, the technical and commercial roles may be divided, though the technical lead will retain overall responsibility.
  • Create job descriptions/terms of reference for specific roles on new programs.
  • Utilize company resources and networks, as well as personal contacts, to identify and contract consultants.
  • Document all terms in accordance with the BD process.
  • Ensure compliance requirements for each bid are established, including data protection and due diligence.
  • Capture and disseminate learning from tenders within areas of responsibility.
  • Review contracts for awarded work against the contract checklist.
  • Facilitate handover to the Programmes Team for seamless mobilization.
Communications

  • Contribute to internal initiatives aimed at strengthening SDDirect as an organization through participation in meetings, working groups, and other forums.
System and Process

  • Support the ongoing enhancement of BD Team performance.
  • Actively participate in the development of the BD Team's annual workplan and objectives, taking a lead on agreed sections.
  • Contribute to the development of BD Team systems and processes, proactively improving them as necessary.
  • Record time as required on the time management system.
