London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

Job Overview

Position: Associate Practitioner Immunophenotyping (SIHMDS)
Band: 4

About Us
Barts Health NHS Trust aims to be a leading group of NHS hospitals, recognized for its commitment to excellence and innovation, delivering safe and compassionate care to patients in East London and surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities

Role Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Associate Practitioner to become a part of our dynamic Immunophenotyping team within one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. This newly established position is integral to our growing service, which is part of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostics Service (SIHMDS). You will play a crucial role in the diagnostics of leukaemia, lymphoma, and other related haematological malignancies, serving a diverse population of over 3.5 million people in North London and Essex. This is a remarkable opportunity to engage with a forward-thinking and innovative laboratory that is at the forefront of research and national and international collaborations in flow cytometry.

Working Environment
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership operates as an independent entity providing pathology services to various NHS Trusts. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health, which serves as the main hub laboratory for the network.

The Pathology Partnership encompasses a range of services, including Blood Sciences, Infectious Diseases, Cellular Pathology, Immunology, Cytogenetics, Molecular Haematology, and Immunophenotyping.

In the 2020/21 fiscal year, the total operating costs across the Partnership were approximately £126 million, with a workforce of around 822 WTE. We are committed to our WeCare values and strive to foster an inclusive environment where every staff member feels a sense of belonging. We particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates, as they are underrepresented within Barts Health at this band.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

The Team
The Immunophenotyping department at Barts Health NHS Trust is in search of a confident and motivated Associate Practitioner to enhance our laboratory services. This pivotal role involves developing and implementing our local and trust strategy. Barts Health NHS Trust comprises several hospitals, providing a comprehensive service for in-patients and operating a regional referral service.

We are a progressive and busy department seeking an enthusiastic individual to support our excellent team. Candidates should have experience working in a pathology laboratory, possess strong organizational skills, and thrive under pressure. Our dedicated scientists and support staff work closely with consultant colleagues, ensuring a collaborative approach that prioritizes patient pathways and strengthens connections between laboratory and clinical specialties.

Technology and Equipment
The department is equipped with cutting-edge next-generation flow cytometry facilities and maintains excellent collaborative relationships with industry partners, often beta testing the latest equipment. We are involved in translational research and offer a variety of specialized manual assays.

Training and Development
We operate within a vibrant teaching-hospital environment, offering a comprehensive range of IBMS accredited CPD activities and actively promoting professional development. The Immunophenotyping department is located in a purpose-built Pathology and Pharmacy Building, fully accredited by UKAS, with full HCPC/IBMS and NSHCS training status.

Network Engagement
The department is actively participating in the expansion and development of the East and South East NHS Pathology Network, consolidating many specialized services at the Royal London Hospital site.
