Project ObjectivesThis funding initiative aims to tackle significant urban challenges as cities transition towards a more sustainable economy. Projects must include an applicant affiliated with a UK research organization eligible for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.
Funding is exclusively available for topics under the '15-minute city' thematic area, developed in collaboration with the DUT partnership, co-funded by Horizon Europe.
Eligibility CriteriaTo qualify for funding, the UK component of the transnational project must involve an applicant from a UK research organization that meets UKRI eligibility requirements. UK applicants can represent any organization eligible for ESRC funding throughout the grant duration.
Applicants may be at any academic career stage, but the project team must possess appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the proposed project.
Joint submissions from multiple UK applicants are permitted, with one designated as the UK National Contact Point (UK project lead) responsible for overseeing the UK project component and compliance with ESRC and UKRI terms and conditions.
Project Team CompositionProject teams must consist of partners from at least three different countries participating in this funding opportunity, with a minimum of two countries being EU member states or associated with Horizon Europe.
All project teams must include at least one urban government authority, either in a funded or unfunded capacity.
Funding AllocationWe aim to support five to seven projects, with up to £2,100,000 available from UKRI for UK applicants. The full economic cost of the UK project can reach £400,000, with ESRC, AHRC, and EPSRC typically funding 80% of this cost.
Collaboration with additional eligible UK partners, including other research entities such as non-profit or public sector organizations, is encouraged but not mandatory.
Proposal SubmissionApplications must include a UK expenditure and additional information form, which will be available upon the launch of the funding opportunity.
A two-stage application process will be implemented, starting with the submission of pre-proposals, followed by full proposals for those deemed eligible.
Evaluation CriteriaProposals will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Excellence – intellectual merit
- Impact and user engagement
- Quality and efficiency of project implementation
