Position Overview

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, responsible for delivering exceptional holistic care and casting techniques.

They will exemplify professional standards consistently and perform their duties in alignment with the policies and procedures of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as well as the standards set forth by the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Casting Committee.

The role requires adaptability in clinical settings, providing coverage across various areas within the Trust, commensurate with their skill level.

Key Responsibilities

1. Ensure optimal standards in the application and adjustment of casts and splints, adhering to best practice guidelines.

2. Guarantee the safe and effective removal of plaster casts and splints, following established best practices.

3. Employ a comprehensive approach to patient care, actively involving patients in their treatment decisions and serving as their advocate.

4. Assess patient needs, considering both clinical and social factors, and communicate relevant issues to the requesting clinician, proposing alternatives when necessary.

5. Educate patients about their care, providing both verbal and written information, and address potential complications related to casting and splinting.

6. Maintain precise documentation of care provided in medical records or plaster forms, including details on skin condition.

7. Respond to inquiries from staff and patients, including those from the community.

8. Document and record telephone consultations for patients seeking follow-up care related to casting.

9. Assist clinicians in fracture manipulation and perform the removal of K wires in the plaster room, following appropriate training.

10. Administer and document Entonox in accordance with competency guidelines under the supervision of a consultant or NMC-trained nurse.

11. Provide and instruct on the use of walking aids.

12. Assist in surgical settings with the application of specialized casts post-operation.

Professional Expectations

The post holder must maintain professional accountability and adhere to the standards set by the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners (AOP) and the British Orthopaedic Association's casting standards.

They must possess a valid British Casting Certificate (BCC) and demonstrate ongoing professional development, maintaining a personal development plan and a professional profile. Registration on the British Casting register is also required.

With a minimum of 12 months of experience as a qualified BCC holder, the post holder will work independently while supporting registered nurses and allied health professionals in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for trauma and orthopaedic conditions, including the application of all casts and braces without direct supervision.

They will also provide technical and professional support in the removal and application of casts and splints across various clinical settings, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams such as Podiatrists and Physiotherapists.

The role requires the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, overseeing the daily operations of the plaster room and providing educational support to trainees and plaster room assistants.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Valid BOA registration
  • Completion of Plaster Course / BCC
  • Experience with Ponseti technique

Desirable:

  • Degree-level education
  • Post-registration development in Teaching and Assessing

Experience

  • Experience in mentoring, facilitation, teaching, assessing, and coaching
