The perfusion department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for a dedicated and proactive individual to join our esteemed team as a Senior Clinical Perfusion Specialist. Key Responsibilities

1. Role Objective:

To enhance the clinical perfusion services provided by the Trust, with a primary focus on delivering high-quality perfusion support at our facilities. This includes managing cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage, and intra-aortic balloon pump systems.

2. Essential Collaborators:

  • Cardiothoracic Surgeons
  • Anaesthetists
  • Nursing Staff and Healthcare Assistants
  • Operating Department Practitioners
  • Surgical Care Practitioners

3. Core Duties:

  • Exhibit a high level of proficiency in executing a diverse array of adult clinical perfusion techniques and procedures.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of quality standards within the perfusion services.
  • Engage in a 24/7 on-call perfusion service to meet the needs of the Trust.

4. Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the Code and Standards of Practice as established by the relevant professional organizations.
  • Assume responsibility for delivering a specialized perfusion service across the Trust, including cardiopulmonary bypass and cell salvage procedures, while maintaining flexibility to adapt to service demands.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills and knowledge in adult clinical practice, mentoring and training other team members.
  • Utilize a range of theoretical frameworks to inform clinical practice and assist in developing care management strategies.
  • Prepare, prime, and operate bypass equipment for adult cardiac surgical procedures, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
  • Oversee quality control, calibration, and maintenance of complex medical equipment, ensuring safe and effective use during clinical procedures.
  • Conduct patient assessments to gather relevant medical histories and make informed clinical decisions regarding cardiac procedures.
  • Administer medications in accordance with local policies and clinical requirements.
  • Participate in the on-call rota to provide continuous perfusion coverage, including trauma cases.
  • Stay informed about specialized techniques and procedures required for individual patient needs.
  • Encourage and engage in departmental projects, demonstrating a commitment to evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with the Perfusion Team and medical staff to manage workload effectively and address any service challenges.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of protocols and procedures relevant to perfusionist duties.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive perfusion records during clinical activities.
  • Exercise vigilance regarding patient hemodynamic status during procedures, providing timely and accurate information to the surgical and anaesthetic teams.
  • Keep abreast of advancements in perfusion practices and pursue additional training as necessary.

Quality and Service Improvement:

  • Proactively update and develop departmental Standard Operating Procedures based on current evidence and clinical governance.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary projects aimed at enhancing perfusion-related services.
  • Participate in the establishment of policies to mitigate patient risk, including infection control measures.
  • Support effective communication systems within the Directorate and across the Trust.

Financial and Resource Management:

  • Assist in the procurement of perfusion-related equipment, ensuring availability and adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Maintain a profile of perfusion equipment, ensuring all devices are operational and properly maintained.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities while ensuring service provision remains within budget.

Research and Development:

  • Engage in clinical effectiveness activities and contribute to the enhancement of service quality and standards.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Perfusionist to meet clinical governance targets and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in research initiatives related to perfusion practices and contribute to academic and service development programs.

Autonomy and Accountability:

  • Interpret and implement relevant national and local policies within the clinical service area.
  • Manage complex cases independently as a skilled practitioner.
  • Evaluate service delivery and ensure compliance with professional standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Perfusion Science or equivalent.
  • Basic Accreditation with the relevant professional body.
  • Active Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists.

Desirable:

  • Advanced Accreditation with the relevant professional body.
  • MSc in Perfusion Science.
