The Highly Specialist Dietitian in Obesity Management will be working within the Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS), demonstrating a high level of expertise within the specialist area. This role plays a key part in the management of patients with complex needs and provides highly specialist advice, intervention, education, and support to patients, carers, and other healthcare professionals.
Main Responsibilities- Work autonomously, planning workload within professional guidelines and policies to manage a caseload of patients with extremely complex needs.
- Responsible for the specialist training of other dietitians within weight management and supervise students.
- Manage patients with complex medical and emotional needs, requiring high demand for care and interventions.
- Undertake nutritional assessments of patients pre- and post-bariatric surgery to ensure they are nutritionally fit for surgery and do not become malnourished following surgery.
- Initiate prescription and modification of nutritional supplements and medications based on patients' nutritional status and dietary needs.
- Take responsibility for ongoing clinical excellence through evidence-based practice and development of standards, policies, and guidelines in conjunction with the trust's standards.
- Contribute to service development, audit, and evaluation as required.
- Teach and train on dietetic aspects of weight management as required.
The team is comprised of Psychologists, Dietitians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Consultant Obesity Physicians, working together to provide compassionate interventions and the best possible care to a highly stigmatized patient group.
Key Requirements- Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.
- HCPC registered.
- Experience in treating morbidly obese patients.
- Evidence of relevant postgraduate clinical education, behavior change training, surgical intervention for obesity, and management of diabetes.
- Experience in using behavior change techniques.
- Extensive years post-registration, including general dietetic experience and experience in general weight management, followed by a minimum of 1 year experience using behavior change techniques to support lifestyle changes.
