Lead Clinical Perfusion Specialist

Position Overview
We are pleased to present an exceptional opportunity for a Clinical Perfusion Specialist to join our dedicated team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. This role is ideal for individuals at any level of their career who are eager to contribute to our comprehensive array of specialized services aimed at enhancing patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Candidates should possess proficiency in a diverse set of perfusion methodologies utilized in adult cardiac surgical procedures, along with familiarity in related therapies such as intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, intra-operative cell salvage, and coagulation assessment through thromboelastography. Strong communication abilities and a collaborative spirit are essential for success in this multi-disciplinary environment.
Our institution is recognized as one of the select centers in the region authorized to deliver veno-venous Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for adults experiencing severe acute respiratory distress. We also administer veno-arterial ECMO for critical cardiac conditions in both adult and pediatric populations, supported by an active retrieval service that accepts referrals from a wide geographical area.
About Our Organization
As a nationally accredited training facility, we prioritize the education and professional growth of our personnel. We offer regular seminars and hands-on training sessions for our surgical teams and colleagues from various departments. We encourage participation in relevant scientific conferences, ensuring our practices are informed by the latest evidence-based research. Opportunities for engaging in research initiatives are also available.
This position is particularly suited for candidates seeking to expand their expertise in perfusion techniques beyond those typically encountered in standard adult cardiac surgery. While experience in pediatric perfusion and ECMO is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite, as comprehensive training will be provided to the successful applicant.
Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland, along with registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland, are mandatory qualifications for this role.
Job Duties
- Prepare and select the appropriate cardiopulmonary bypass apparatus under sterile conditions, tailored to the patient's needs and the surgical procedure, which may involve the manual handling of substantial equipment.
- Develop a tailored perfusion strategy for each patient based on thorough pre-assessment of medical records and collaboration with relevant medical teams, necessitating strong interpersonal skills in a high-pressure environment.
- Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation.
- Execute pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass procedures with or without supervision, depending on experience, with training and oversight provided as needed.
- Administer Intra Aortic Balloon Counter Pulsation therapy competently across all hospital areas.
- Maintain adequate stock levels consistently.
- Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and decontaminated according to departmental standards.
- Actively engage in the blood conservation initiative by providing cell salvage services to all patients.
- Administer blood transfusions in accordance with established transfusion policies.
- Provide a blood management service across various specialties, including the use of sealants and gels.
- Support the delivery of a specialized ECMO service to patients and multidisciplinary teams, including initial setup and ongoing technical assistance throughout the ECMO process, with training provided as necessary.
- Oversee patient parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass, administering medications within established guidelines.
- Be well-versed in emergency protocols for equipment malfunctions, ensuring patient safety at all times.
- Conduct quality assurance checks and procedures, taking appropriate actions in case of discrepancies.
- Accurately complete the required data sets for the Trust.
- Assist in providing near-patient testing services and interpreting results.
- Approach interactions with patients, caregivers, and staff with empathy, especially in challenging situations.
- Facilitate the training and support of senior clinical perfusionists and trainees, demonstrating effective teaching methodologies.
- Maintain precise real-time patient records, ensuring proper storage of hard copies.

- Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland
