Role Summary:

This 12-month position presents an opportunity to lead the charge in establishing Uswitch's credibility and expertise in a crucial sector that directly affects household expenses - energy. You will be part of our award-winning team, recognized as PRCA's In-House PR Team of the Year 2023, dedicated to achieving extensive media coverage and influencing policymakers and decision-makers.

As UK households confront unprecedented challenges due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, we have a responsibility to elevate our efforts in supporting consumers.

You will advocate for change within the energy sector and empower consumers to take charge of their household expenses.

This role is ideal for a seasoned PR professional with a deep understanding of the national media landscape, ready to take ownership of our consumer-centric energy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Campaign Management: Strategizing and executing campaigns during pivotal moments that align with commercial, policy, or brand marketing goals. Identifying innovative ways to engage target audiences, including collaboration with influencers. Partnering with product and commercial teams to ensure alignment with business objectives.

Content Strategy: Securing prominent media coverage to support our energy messaging, including fixed deals, household energy savings, and policy priorities. Managing internal data and external consumer research, crafting high-quality press releases, and maintaining an updated story pipeline shared with broader marketing teams. Collaborating closely with our Digital Earned Media and organic social media teams to ensure cohesive activity.

Press Office Management: Delivering an industry-leading press office, addressing inquiries during and outside office hours (typically only 1-2 times per month) and overseeing our media center. Confidently representing the PR team to internal and external stakeholders, including managing spokesperson briefings and coordinating high-profile media interviews.

News Monitoring: Keeping abreast of industry developments and daily news to identify opportunities for expert commentary that stands out in a crowded media landscape.

Media Relations: Cultivating, sustaining, and maximizing robust relationships with consumer affairs, energy, personal finance, lifestyle, trade, and broadcast media, as well as other key industry influencers, including our business partners.

Regulatory Collaboration: Partnering with the policy and regulation team to provide PR support for our public affairs initiatives.

Spokesperson Management: Overseeing, coaching, and training spokespeople, coordinating their schedules for media interviews and appearances.

Agency Coordination: Acting as the primary contact for our Energy PR agency, ensuring we derive maximum value from our external partnerships.

Reporting and Analysis: Documenting all incoming media coverage and measuring it against competitors, managing relationships with news monitoring services, and reporting on outcomes.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in consumer PR, particularly in relevant sectors (energy, utilities, personal finance), with exceptional communication skills. A proactive self-starter with a successful track record of creating and managing consumer campaigns that yield impactful results with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to comprehend our policy objectives and effectively convey them through PR messaging, transforming policy positions into compelling media narratives. Capable of understanding complex topics and articulating them in consumer-friendly language.
  • Proficient in managing priorities and making strategic decisions, including assessing whether a reactive media moment serves the best interests of consumers while balancing our commercial and policy objectives.
  • Skilled in leveraging reactive media opportunities and producing timely, newsworthy comments, along with creative thinking for proactive campaigns.
  • Strong writing abilities - capable of expressing messages in an engaging manner with meticulous attention to detail. Comfortable working with insights, data, and third-party consumer research to enhance our storytelling.
