Role Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in collaborative partnerships across the department, integrating financial insights into key decision-making processes. This involves merging policy considerations with financial acumen and analytical expertise. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to think strategically and communicate effectively, ensuring the responsible management of public funds and optimal budget utilization.

As a vital contributor to our team, you will support senior leadership in executing the financial strategy of the department, navigating the intersection of technical and political spheres to influence significant government policies that impact our budgetary framework. Your focus will be on maximizing value for every pound spent by the department, overseeing policy funding and operational expenditures, and leading fiscal initiatives.

Key Duties

  • Collaborate with the broader finance team to develop a comprehensive understanding of our financial standing and progress towards strategic objectives.
  • Establish strong working relationships with colleagues across finance, strategy, and human resources to achieve shared goals.
  • Transform complex data into actionable insights that drive decision-making, providing clear and concise financial and non-financial analyses.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of departmental groups, their operational dynamics, financial risks, and opportunities, while fostering collaboration across the organization.
  • Play a significant role in the Spending Review process, from preparation to negotiation with the Treasury, while shaping and implementing departmental strategies.
  • Utilize strategic and commercial insights to promote effective decision-making and risk management practices that enhance financial planning.
  • Act as a liaison between the department and the Treasury on financial planning and negotiations, building constructive relationships to support departmental priorities.
  • Engage proactively with financial systems to enhance the quality of information available to stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively to improve financial capabilities and foster a deeper understanding across the organization.
  • Provide guidance and support for the professional development of finance team members.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, with a proven track record of building influential relationships. A comprehensive skill set, attention to detail, and strategic insight are essential. Experience in cross-organizational collaboration to meet high standards and deadlines is crucial.

Excellent communication skills and proficiency in Excel for data analysis are required, with experience in Power BI considered advantageous. The ability to convey complex information to non-specialist audiences and influence senior management decisions is essential, along with familiarity with Treasury guidance and government accounting principles.
