Recovery Nurse Job Description

Spire Bristol Hospital is seeking an experienced Recovery Nurse to join our Theatre team on a full-time, 37.5-hour per week, permanent basis.

Role Purpose:

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder is responsible for assessing, evaluating, and implementing care for patients in the recovery room without supervision. The successful candidate will also deputise for the team leader as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Carries out nursing duties in the recovery room according to policies and procedures, reporting any difficulties or concerns.
  • Maintains accurate and legible written records of care, ensuring patient safety, privacy, and dignity at all times.
  • Communicates effectively and responsibly with colleagues, senior staff, and within the multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Develops and maintains clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care, following PREP/CPD requirements.
  • Participates in monitoring and maintaining standards in accordance with Spire policies and procedures, as well as NMC/HPC/AODP/AFPP professional documents.
  • Participates on the on-call roster as required to cover PACU.
  • Maintains custody and checking of controlled drugs daily, in accordance with the Clinic's policy and NMC/HPC professional documents.
  • Promotes effective communication within the department and with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies, keeping the anaesthetic manager informed.
  • Participates in supervising, orientating, appraising, and monitoring attendance standards of staff, ensuring quality standards of patient care are maintained.
  • Participates in appraisals and personal reviews, working to achieve agreed set objectives.
  • Assists in audits and implementation of QI projects within the unit.
  • Acts as a mentor to students within the PACU or new employees allocated to the recovery department.
  • Actively participates in and is responsible for the management and recovery of children and young persons.
  • Participates in developing to more senior positions within the unit, undertaking study/courses that benefit the department and candidate's professional development.
Requirements:
  • Qualified Registered Nurse with PACU or Operating Department Practitioner experience.
  • Experience working in teams and with minimum supervision.
  • HCPC or NMC registration.
  • 2-year postgraduate experience.
  • 2 years' experience in recovery.
  • Experience within the NHS and private sector.
  • 2 years Paediatric recovery or paediatric experience desirable but not essential.
  • Intensive Care experience desirable but not essential.
  • Understanding of the post-operative needs of adults and children.
  • PILS and ILS desirable.
