Job Title: Senior Civil Structural Engineer

Thomas Thor is seeking a highly skilled Senior Civil Structural Engineer to join our team in Bristol. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a critical role in the development of the Structural chapter of the Safety Case for submission to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) for use in the Generic Design Assessment (GDA).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyse metallic, reinforced concrete, and soil-subgrade supported structures to support engineering and licensing requirements.
  • Develop mature designs by critical thinking, literature research, interacting with team members from other disciplines and vendors, and any analyses as permitted by project milestones.
  • Support the preparation of design deliverables, presentations, and communicate design progress in stakeholder meetings.
  • Support development of engineering and licensing requirements and documentation for nuclear structures, systems, and components.
Typical Analyses:
  • Static and dynamic finite element analyses (FEA) using ANSYS.
  • Drop and impact (e.g., missile and aircraft) analyses and target response using LS-DYNA.
  • Simulation of the seismic response of freestanding structures in air or submerged in water.
  • Static and dynamic analyses of large reinforced concrete or steel-concrete composite structures.
  • Soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses with freestanding and/or anchored structures.
  • Beam and plate stress calculations using established principles of strength of materials.
Requirements:
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical/Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and design codes such as ASME, ASCE, ACI, and AISC.
  • Industrial experience in stress analysis codes such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, and STAAD.Pro.
  • Prior nuclear industry experience.
  • Excellent credentials in principles of solid mechanics.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810.
